Dining In or Dining Out

There are women whom eat slowly and daintily, leaving a small portion of food on their plate as if to show that their tiny little tummies are so full and they can’t possibly eat any more.  Well, I’m hardly one of those women.  I like to eat.  When I come to Sugar Hollow Retreat, eating is one of my favorite things to do.

Since you can bring your own food with you, the group I am with usually ends up cooking and eating together.  It’s not a new concept, but one that seems to get washed away in my daily life back in Raleigh.  Cooking and eating becomes a means by which you share time together and make new memories, instead of just something you have to do three times a day.

If the group I’m with doesn’t want to cook, there are plenty of options for dining out.  Two of my favorites are just a few miles from Sugar Hollow.  Elk Mills Grill is quite close, and serves really great biscuits and gravy.  In this photo is the breakfast I had there most recently: bacon, eggs, and biscuits and gravy.  Oh, it is so delicious.

In addition to the restaurant, there are family style meals to be had.  Family style meals are amazing for small and large groups.  To those unacquainted with family style service, it means your group chooses a number of meats and sides—and each dish is bottomless.  This usually translates into a very happy group!  Shirley’s Home Cooking is one of the best family style restaurants I’ve ever tried.  Be sure to try the corn bread salad while you’re there.

At your next visit to Sugar Hollow, be sure to leave some time for dinning out.  Try some of the local goodies that can only be found here.  These two are some of my own favorites when I visit Sugar Hollow.  You might also try the Captain’s Table along the shore of Watauga Lake.
